CRY FROM RIVER
DROWNING OF ELDERLY MAN. BODY NOT YET RECOVERED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Levin, January 28. Owen McEnaney, a single man, aged 61 years, employed in the flax industry by Ross, Rough and Co., was drowned in the Manawatu River at Koputaroa on Saturday night last. After ten years camped on the bank of the river, Mr. McEnaney as usual went to get water. Three men nearby heard him call out, but going to the spot saw him disappear. Efforts to recover the body failed, dragging operations throughout the week-end being unsuccessful.
He was a returned soldier and was a highly respected resident of the district.
