NORTH ISLAND TENNIS EVENT ROUSSELL DEFEATED IN FINAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night. Ideal weather prevailed at Waipawa during the week-end, when the championship events of the North Island tennis tournament was concluded. The courts drew many spectators for the finals, in which a high standard of play was witnessed. Coombe beat Roussell for the men’s singles title, the match going to four sets. Miss Nicholls beat Miss Howe in the women’s singles. Charters and Roussell took the men’s doubles from Coombe and Pearce in a strenuous match. In the women’s doubles Misses Nicholls and Howe beat Mrs. Adams and Miss Gould. Charters and Miss Nicholls defeated Dyer and Miss Macassey in the combined doubles. W. Hooper took the schoolboys’ singles from his brother, S. Hooper, after a strenuous and closely-contested fight. The handicap events will finish to-mor-row.' The surprise of the day was Roussell s victory against Charters in the semi-final of the men’s singles. Roussell played brilliant tennis, Charters showing signs of fatigue towards the end of the match. The scores were: 3—6, 6 —l, 6—4, 6—o. Miss Howe beat Miss Shand in the semi-final of the women’s singles after a strenuous match lasting two and a half hours. Other semi-finals resulted: Coombe beat Dyer, 6—2, 6—o, 7—5; Charters and Roussell beat Robinson and Lamb, I—6,' 6—4, 6—2; Miss Nicholls beat Mrs. Adams, 6—o, 6—o; Mrs. Adams and Miss Gould beat Mrs. Cotterill and Miss Glenny, 6—l, 6—4.
