FIRE AT INGLEWOOD

HOUSE PARTLY DESTROYED. VALUED FURNITURE AND PICTURES One of the most beautiful homesteads at Inglewood, that of Mr. L. Sutherland, on Windsor Road, was partly destroyed by fire early on Saturday morning. Mr. Martin Sutherland, who lives opposite, was awakened by the falling of glass and summoned the brigade. The fire, however, had a strong hold, but the brigade was not long in controlling it. Mr. Sutherland possessed some valued furniture and paintings, and what was not destroyed by fire was ruined by smoke and water. Mr. Sutherland was at New Plymouth when the fire happened, and when he left the house at 7 p.m. on Friday night everything was in order. The house was insured for £5OO and the furniture for £4OO in the Standard office. . Another outbreak of fire occurred on Windsor Road earlier in the evening. The children had gone away swimming while the mother was working at the back of the house when she saw smoke coming from the front of the homestead. On investigating she found the front verandah was alight. She managed to put the fire out with the garden hose. Earlier in the week a small haystack on one of the borough reserves, owned by Mr. N. Peters was burned.
