HAWERA TRACK NOTES
CONTINGENT FOR WELLINGTON. LITTLE FAST WORK ON SATURDAY. (By “Limited.”) There was little fast work on the Hawera tracks on Saturday, the bulk of the work being of routine character. Arouse (Cole) sprinted three furlongs in 37 3-ss, and Carfex (Cole) went over a similar journey a shade faster. Aga Khan (Vaughan) and Diagano (Cole) did a smart five furlongs finishing up together in 1.2%5, going evenly throughout. Aga Khan is working attractively at present and looks like being at his best any time now. Diagano is also shaping well. Ruri did strong pace work but other members of J. Fryer’s team, Panlof, Onewhetu, Silk Sox, March Alone and Daivet were given easy tasks. The Hunting Song—Lady Bentinck gelding Topthorn, who was operated on recently, is going along steadily and there is every indication so far of the operation being eminently satisfactory. Golden Hair is still being given easy Eka, who met with an accident while "being loaded on the train at holiday time, has recovered from any inconvenience and is working again. Autumn Leaf (Vaughan) and New (Grylls) were .companions m a gallop over half a mile when the firstnamed again proved too good, finishing in front by a good margin in 50%5. Lowenberg, who has had a short respite and been physicked since racing, has resumed steady work. ■ Gold. Gleam, Careful, Exquisite, Beau Star, Ingenuity, Sandstar filly and Brough’s two Colossus youngsters were out exercising. , By Saturday’s train the Hawera horses Fersen, Friesland, Arouse, Harvest Moon and Silver Wings, with their trainers, O. Cox, J. Brown and W. Grindlay, left for Trentham to take part at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting which starts tomorrow. T. Dulieu is to ride Friesland ana despite having to put up a bit of overweight W.' J. Broughton will probably be on Arouse in the Ruapehu Hack H an * dicap. Fersen’s rider in the Apprentices Plate is held in abeyance, but probably O. Cox will rely on his own apprentice, Eric Coyle, who rides Fersen in his track work. The Hawera horses are all in tip-top racing condition and should give a good account of themselves. Fersen, Friesland and Harvest Moon are all recent winners while Arouse shaped most encouragingly at his last outing and has done well in his work since. Silver Wings has shown improvement in her track work and is in a five-furlong hack race on the concluding day in which, if not too harshly treated by the handicapper, she should have something to say at the finish. , Fryer’s apprentices, G. Duncan and C. Sheild, returned from Australia during the week. Duncan has resumed riding but Sheild, who was seriously hurt at Caulfield, is still convalescing and will be out of the saddle for some months, the Australian authorities ruling that jockeys suffering concussion are debarred from race riding for four months, J. Fryer, who is rapidly building up a big team, has received Gibraltar back again after a lengthy spell. Gibraltar, who was a hard-worked horse and a good performer, looks in great heart and should have benefited by his let up. While galloping with Silver Wings on Friday morning, The Tiger str tick himself, causing lameness. As G. Richards lease of The Tiger ceases after the first day’s racing at Wanganui, he will not be further persevered with by that owner.
