ST. CUTHBERT’S COLLEGE.
The Auckland Presbyterian College for ladies, St. Cuthbert’s, affords the best available training of the mind combining as it does a wise and balanced education of the physical, moral, religious and social sides of the pupil’s nature. The school buildings at Ono Tree Hill were opened in 1925 and were planned under expert architectural and educational guidance to provide the best possible boarding and day school for girls. Designed On the group system, the buildings consist of the school, thiee fine hostels for boarders (named respectively Melrose House, Elgin House and Dunblane House), and the Refectory. They stand in the midst of a splendid stretch of 15 acres of open, upland country lying on the N.W. slopfe of One Tree Niji, adjoining Cornwall Park. This fine, healthy site cannot be deprived of its open space and extensive outlook over the surrounding country, and the excellent climate of Auckland Is wellknown to be suitable for girls. The school building is designed on the best modern lines, special attention being given to light and ventilation. Large windows ate arranged so as to give the maximum of light and fresh air without draughts. The school consists of an assembly hall, which is also equipped for use as a gymnasium, 18 class-rooms, a well-equipped science laboratory, and a domestic science room, fitted with electric stoves and every facility for those taking the domestic science course. The kindergarten section is complete in itself.
The hostels have also been carefully planned to provide open-air sleeping. The girls occupy single cubicles, or dormitories, opening on to balconies fitted with Whitney windows, and amply provided with the necessary cupboard and wardrobe accommodation. Each hostel contains two common rooms—a playroom and cosy reading-rodm—where the girls spend most of their leisure time in the evenings and during the weekends. These hostels have Cement partitions as a protection against fire. Each hostel is under a house mistress, emd the principal and matron reside in a hostel. The school maintains a high standard of education and shows a very fine record Of passes for University Entrance, University Sholarship, School Leaving Certificates, Home Nursing, First Aid and Pianoforte. The music department is under a. highly qualified directress and assistants. Parents whose daughters take extra lessons in music,-art, dancing, etc., would do well to enter them for these subjects at the school. Under the mistresses, in this way, the girls are able to enter into school life most fully.
