OLD BOYS DEPOSED

HAWERA’S SURPRISE WIN FAILURE OF OLD BOYS' BATTING. DROPPED CATCHES EXPENSIVE. Hawera effected a second surprise by deposing Old Boys from top position in the southern senior A competition at Hawera. Old Boys’ fielding was frequently not clean and crisp, and several dropped catches gave Hawera a lot of runs. Hawera’s fielding was better, keeping Old Boys’ score low, only three batsmen reaching double figures. Hawera went to the crease first, the innings realising 150 runs. Penny and Kara opened but the latter fell early. Penny reached 40 before falling a victim to H. Barker. His innings wag fairly quiet, and he was fortunate that one oi’ two chances early in his innings were not accepted. Three wickets were dawn for 33, but Jennings, Phillips and Bray were more confident, and when the seventh wicket fell the score was 123. The remaining batsmen added 27. Herbert and Sturrock shared the wickets. Fleet’s second delivery bowled Thomas before a run was scored in Old Boys’ innings. W. Barker was dismissed after scoring eight and with the total at 27. Thrush followed without any increase in the score, the devastating agent in each case being Fleet. Duke top-scored with 19.
