The opening Kaponga batsman did not settle down and four wickets were down for 34, but Steady batting by V. Betts saved the situation. His was a valuable innings at a moment when it was needed, as only two other Kaponga batsmen reached double figured. Buist bowled well and aided by really good fielding kept the runs down. Power Board commenced disastrously, two wickets being down for five runs. At four for 29 Buist went to the crease and stayed there till the end. PATEA WELL BEATEN STRATFORD BOWLERS ON TOP. LAY AND BARLOW SHARE WICKETS. After knocking up 133, Stratford dismissed Patea for 60 in a senior match at Stratford on Saturday. The chief feature of the match was the manner in which Lay and Barlow walked through the visiting batsmen. It was significant that of the 30 overs required to dismiss Patea 11 were maidens. Barlqw and Lay opened well for Stratford, but Lay did not last long, spooning u> an easy one baqk to the bowler's hands. Young and Barlow piled on the runs, however, and aided by poor fielding soon brought the total up. After such a good beginning, when the first five batsmen all did wejl, a slight rot set in, the next four wickets going for 11 runs, C. Mcl. Young then brightened the game with vigorous hitting, and was. responsible for a strong “wagging” of the tail. Archer, a fairly ..fast bowler, was Patea’s main weapon ■of ■. attack, though Pauling’s spin did more damage. Patea made a disastrous opening, five wickets falling for 13 runs. Bourke. was the only batsman to score at all well, and he carried his bat for 20. The remainder of the team wilted and succumbed be-, fore the onslaught of Lay and Barlow, both in great form.
