SEVERE EARTHQUAKE

SEISMIC ACTIVITY IN TIBET. NO AUTHENTIC INFORMATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.0 p.m. Calcutta, Jan. 4. A severe earthquake shock, with the epicentral region probably in ' South Tibet about 200 miles north of Mount Everest, was recorded on Indian and Burmese seismographs at 7.22 a.m. yesterday. Scientists are of the opinion that the barren country of the central Tibetan plateau beyond the Himalayan ranges is rapidly becoming an area of seismic activity.

Owing to recent heavy snowstorms communication between India and remote parts of Tibet is impossible and probably it will be weeks before authentic information is obtainable about the recent shocks which were the severest recorded in India since the great Bihar earthquake a year ago.
