PRICES MAINTAINED

BUTTER AND CHEESE ADVANCE. LONDON MARKET QUOTATIONS. Tile advance in dairy produce prices recorded on the London markets last week has been steadily maintained ac. cording to cable advice received by various agents this week and latest quotations show an advance of Is in butter and from 6d to Is in cheese. The market closed a shade easier, but steady. There has been fairly active trading in Taranaki during the week, f.o.b. butter sales having been made at 9d, equivalent to 81s London. No cheese sales are recorded.

The London market presents several Interesting features, according to a New Plymouth agent. Pointing out that end of year stocks in the United Kingdom in 1934 were 5000 tons greater than at the corresponding date in 1933, he stated that the increase of 10s per cwt in 1934 prices compared with 1933 was remarkable. At the end of December, 1933, quotations were 65s to 67s and at this figure they continued steadily until after January. It was impossible to say whether the present quotations would be maintained. Against heavier stocks were balanced greater English consumption and a re-continuance of German buying.

A London United Press cable states that butter is steady and cheese quiet and quotes as follows:—Butter: Danish, 1225; choicest salted, New Zealand, 775; Australian. 76s to 775; unsalteds about one shilling premium. Cheese: New Zealand, coloured, 46s 6d to 475; Australian, both, 45s to 45s 6d. Other quotations are:— Mr. E. Griffiths (Messrs. A. J. Mills and Co. Ltd.): Butter, market easier, 76s to 775; market, steady, white and coloured, 475. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Ltd.:—Butter: New Zealand choicest salted, 76s to 77s per cwt (69s to 70s); market slow. Cheese: White, 47s per cwt (435); coloured. 47s per cwt (435). The market is weaker. Henry A. Lane and Co. Ltd.: Butter, 76s to 775, market quieter at the advanced prices; cheese, 47s to 47s 6d, market quieter at the advanced prices.
