SHEEP AND CATTLE SALES GOOD TONE AT WESTFIELD YARDS. STEERS AT CHRISTMAS RATES. SHORTAGE OF RUNNER CALVES.

Auckland, Jan. 3. There was a good tone at the opening sale of the year at Westfield to-day. About 750 cattle were offered, with few of outstanding quality. Choice and prime steers remained firm at values ruling at the Christmas sale, but inferior sorts were hard to quit. Most of the cows and heifers offered were below standard and bidding was dull, with a general easing in values. Extra choice ox made 23s a 1001 b; choice and prune ox, 20s to 225; secondary and plain, 16s to 19s; prime young cow and heifer beef, 18s to 225; ordinary cow beef, 10s to 17s. Extra heavy prime steers made £8 7s 6d to £9; heavy prime, £7 15s to £8 ss; lighter prime, £7 to £7 12s 6d; light prime, £6 to £6 15s; small and unfinished, £3 15s to £5 ss; extra heavy prune young cows and heifers, £5 5s to £6 ss; heavy prime, £4 2s 6d to £5 2s 6d; lighter prime, £3 to £4; other killable cows, £1 5s to £2 17s 6d.

There was a full yarding of calves, with a shortage of heavy runners. Competition was fairly 7 keen, and good quality offerings realised values on a par with those at the last sale, while rougher sorts were a shade easier. Runners, 35s to 755; vealers, 16s to 735. The sheep yarded were well up to average numbers, with a fair standard of quality. Competition was brisk for all prime sheep and values were firm at late rates for wethers, with a stronger tendency for ewes. Lambs were plentiful and although the demand was quite good, price levels receded to those ruling before the Christmas sale. Wethers, prime 22s 6d to 27s 3d; unfinished, 18s to 22s 3d; ewes, prime, 12s 6d to 18s 6d; unfinished, 2s' 9d to 12s 3d; hoggets, prime, 20s to 23s 6d; unfinished, 15s to 19s; lambs, prime, 16s to 23s 6d; unfinished, 10s to 15s.

The sale of a good yarding of pigs was not affected by recent export restrictions. Bidding was keen throughout, especially for heavy prime baconers, and prices for these were on a par with those at the last sale, while porkers tended to be slightly easier. The demand for stores was light, with lower prices. Baconers realised per lb s<d to 5-Jd; porkers, 5Jd to 6d; baconers, 52s to 745; porkers, 33s to 495; large stores, 20s to 30s.

DRY WEATHER SALE CANTERBURY FATTENING POOR. MOSTLY LIGHT SORTS OFFERED. Christchurch, Jan. 3. With a prolonged period of dry weather through November and December, the latter the driest month on record, fattening in Canterbury has had a pro - * nounced check. This was reflected in the quality of the fat stock entry at Addington market to-day. There, was a preponderance of poor and light sorts, and indifferent auctions in most sections. Store sheep: Less than twelve pens were offered.. There was a strong demand, especially for wethers. Wethers brought to 17s 2d, lambs to 15s, and ordinary to 20s. . Fat lambs: The yarding included a heavy proportion of light sorts. Buyers were cautious. Freezers took the bigger proportion. Values were on a par with late rates.

Fat sheep: An entry of 4000 of mixed quality. The sale for wethers was keen and prices advanced Is a head. Ewes were not in demand, with a decline of Is to Is 6d a head. Extra prime heavy wethers sold to 27s Id; heavy, 23s 6d to 255; mediumweight, 21s 6d to 235; ordinary, 19s to 21s; light, to 18s. Extra prime heavy ewes to 21s 4d; heavy, 17s to 18s 6d; mediumweight, 15s to 16s 6d; ordinary, 13s to 14s 6d; light to 12s 6d Fat cattle: an entry of 475 head. It was an erratic sale and values declined up to £1 a head compared with the last market. Best beef made 22s to 24s per 1001 b (very little at the latter figure); good, 19s to 21s 6d; heavy, 16s to 18s 6d; medium, 14s to 16s; rough, down to 10s. Extra prime heavy steers sold to £lO 6d; heavy, £8 to £9; medium weight, £7 5s to £8; ordinary, £3 15s to £6 10s; light, to £3 ss; extra prime heifers, to £8 17s 6d; prime, £4 10s to £6; ordinary, £2 10s to £4; light, to £2 10s; extra prime cows, to £7 17s 6d; prime, £3 lbs to £5; medium, £2 to £3 ss: light, to £2. Vealers: A large entry, and, except for best quality, a dragging sale. Top price was £5 Is. . . Store cattle: An unimpressive ottering with no steers. Two-year-old Hereford heifers sold to 495, fresh cows, to £3, and old from 10s. For dairy cattle limits were inelastic over a dull sale. Extra good second and third calvers sold to £6; good, £3 to £5; extra good heifers, to £6 ss; good, £3 to £4. Store pigs: A medium entry and an irregular sale. Values generally were easier. Weaners, 10s to 12s 6d; slips, 13s to 16s 6d; stores, 15s to 30s. Fat pigs: There was a fair demand for a large offering with solid export competition. Choppers, 30s to £4 6s; baconers, 45s to £3 Ils 6d; price per pound, average, s.}d to s|d; porkers, 26s 6d to 39s 6d; average per lb, 5Jd to s|d.

DEMAND FOR VEALERS SALE AT JOHNSONVILLE. BULLOCKS AND COWS SELL WELL. Wellington, Jan. 4. An average yarding of cattle and a small yarding of sheep were forward at the Johnsonville stock sale held by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams Ltd. Bullocks and cows met a keen sale, prices showing an advance of up to 5s per head on late rates. Vealers met a keen demand at late rates. ■

PIGS IN GOOD DEMAND RAIN LIFTS VALUES FOR SHEEP. BUSINESS DONE AT HAWERA SALE The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. .Ltd. reports that the Hawera sale on Thursday was well attended by the public. Entries in the pig section were very few but what were yarded sold well at late rates. There was an entry of approximately 1250 lambs, 150 wethers and a few odd lots of fat ewes. The recent rains experienced had a good effect upon buyers and quite a good sale resulted, bidding on all classes df lamb being fairly animated. White face wether lambi realised from 13s 8d to 15s. Small blackface lambs from 14s to 14s 3d, culls to 9s 6d. The entry of cattle was not large and prices dropped a little compared with the last sale.
