Charles William Channaw, aged 63, an artist of Camden Town, who lost a big city business after his father left him £20,000, was fined 5s at Hampstead for mendicancy. He possessed 6d, two boxes of matches and a note from Mr. Bernard Shaw scribbled on the back of a sketch Channaw had sent him: “If you can draw like this why sell matches?” Channaw had been offered £4 for . the sketch, but demanded £l5.
