HEALTH CAMP SITE

GIFT TO EDUCATION BOARD. MR. HOPE GIBBONS’ GENEROSITY. The generous gift of a 10-acre site for health camp purposes to the Wanganui Education Board by Mr. Hope Gibbons was referred to by the board's chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway, Patea, at the board’s meeting this week. Mr. Hemingway said that following upon the decision to return the health camp site to. Dr. Wall in accordance with the agreement that if the site were not used for a health camp it be re-transfer-red to him, he had received a visit from Mr. Hope Gibbons, who offered a site of about 10 acres at Gonville for a health camp, provided the board was willing to support the movement as it had in the past. ! “I need hardly say that I immediately assured him that the board and its staff wo.uld assist by every means in their power,” said Mr. Hemingway. '“I duly visited the site with Mr. Hope Gibbons, Mr. Boulton, Mr. Hodge, Dr. Wall and Messrs. Bignell and Donaldson, and on inspection we found that it was all that could be desired. < “Though within the city, it is in a quiet and somewhat secluded neighbourhood and consists of about six acres of level land adjoining the road, with the balance rising to a convenient plateau on which the health camp buildings would be erected. The land has a efine shelter belt of pine trees some 20 years old surrounding it, under which the children could rest in the shade, and what makes the site additionally valuable is that the Tawhero school is only a few chains away. “Immediately after our inspection Mr. Hodge took in hand the work of clearing the site with the aid of unemployed labour, and I understand everything is now in readiness for the transfer of the tea kiosk from Castlecliff to the site, tenders for which will be called shortly. Both Dr. Ada Patterson, Director of School Hygiene, and Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, school medical officer for the Wanganui education district, have visited the site and have expressed then- warm approval of it. “The thanks of tire board are due to Mr. Hope Gibbons and family for their extremely valuable gift, which should enable Wanganui to possess a health camp second to none in the Dominion.” In reply to Mr. Hornblow, the chairman said the site would be vested in trustees, the Mayor of Wanganui for the time being, the chairman of the education board, a member of the Hope Gibbons family, and two citizens of Wanganui. There would be no liability on the shoulders of the board. RIVERLEA CHRISTMAS TREE. SOCIAL AFTERNOON HELD.
