After explanations had been made by two Hawera borough councillors regarding previous statements made by them at council meetings as to the condition of the inside of the King Edward Park pavilion, Cr. W. G. Strange cleared the air by apologising to Cr. L. H. Clapham at the Hawera Borough Council meeting on Monday evening. He had complained of what he considered the disgraceful state of the floor, said Cr. Clapham, owing to the amount of dirt lying about on it. He had been taken to task by another councillor, who, at a later meeting, said that the floorhad been cleared and washed when such was not the case, He still considered that Cr. Clapham had made rather an extravagant statement, said Cr. Strange, who is chairman of the Parks and Reserves Committee. He admitted that about a yard and a half of Longburn soil for the cricket pitch had been store, 1 , there out of the rain, but it had been piled neatly at one end. It was not there for the time alleged by Cr. Clapham, because it was not off the pitch for that length of time. There might have, been other soil there, but he still maintained that the floor was not nearly as bad as Cr. Clapham alleged.

The Mayor (Mr. J. E. Campbell) expressed regret that the difference had arisen. He thought Cr. Strange’s statement at the last meeting was not quite correct and that the matter could be happily disposed of if he apologised. PARK TENNIS CLUB. LADDER MATCHES PLAYED.
