FITZROY AFFAIRS

GOODS SHED NOT WARRANTED. BRIDGE AT PAYNTER’S AVENUE. While the population of Fitzroy was considerable the business houses in the area were few and it was difficult to see how an increase of business for the railway could be made to defray the expense that would be incurred by the provision of a goods shed at Fitzroy, wrote Mr. H. C. Couch, district railway traffic manager, Wanganui, to the Fitzroy Ratepayers’ Association. The letter was tabled at a meeting of the association on Monday night. Apart from the business firms’ provisions, most of the coal and wood for the district was now dropped at Smart Road and left at the consignee’s risk, said Mr. L. N. Fairhall. Mr. G. B. Purdue emphasised the fact that a goods shed at present showed no prospects of increasing the railway traffic. It was decided to accept the Railway Department’s decision in the meantime. A further application for a slot telephone is to be made, it was decided. Mr. H. Lister stated that many of the ratepayer* in the area were objecting to the proposal of the Taranaki Education Board to transfer Mr. G. Lyall (headmaster) and Miss Walker from the Fitzroy school because an epidemic had lowered the grade of the school. It was considered the matter rested with the school committee. Mr. Lister pointed out the need for repairs to the railway bridge in Paynters’ Avenue. Several accidents had occurred recently owing to sprung planks. The executive considered the matter required urgent attention and the Railway Department is to be approached. The New Plymouth Borough Council stated that it was unable to accede to requests for (1) a reduction of charges for electricity; (2) a discount on rates paid before the due date; (3) a new road to the beach from the east end of Fitzroy; (4) a footbridge over the Henui Stream at Waiwaka Terrace; (5) the surface sealing of the entrance to Paynter’s Avenue southwards from Devon Street. The raising of the footpath at the south end of Paynters’ Avenue was in hand and the cutting back of the boxthorn and gorse on the corner of Fitzroy and Clemow Roads was being attended to, advised the Borough Council. Owing to the holidays the next meeting of the association will be held on the second Monday in February. Those present were Messrs L. N. Fairhall {chairman), C. H. Burton, A. J. Chainey, J. Abraham, P. Yates, H. Lister and G. B. Purdue (secretary).
