CANADA’S TRADE

OVER £2O,OOO,OOO.EXPORT. INCREASE SINCE OTTAWA PACTS. Ottawa, Oct. 20; Further striking proof that' the steady upward trend of Canada’s ' export ■ and import trade is almost entirely’ dtie to trade gains with Empire countries’is con-, tained in a report by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. : V Aggregate exports during August this year were valued at 55,-249,000 -dollars (£11,049,800) and more than half, this amount, 29,602,000 dollars (£5,920,000) went to the Empire countries. ThiS-repre-sented a total gain of’ 60 per cent, over the corresponding period last year, while exports to foreign countries showed-a slight decline. ■ ■ ■ ■ The chief gains, in percentages, : were as follows: United Kingdom, 60 per cent.; British South Africa, 286 per cent.; Australia, 26 per cent.; New Zealand, 80 per cent.; British India, 105 per cent.; Jamaica, 31 per cent.; Newfoundland, 5 per cent. The most striking increase was to the Straits Settlements. If amounted to 161.000 dollars (£32,000)— or 973 per cent. On the import side of' the picture, teports to the executive council of the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association showed that in July last imports from Empire countries increased by. nO less than 30 per cent. The chief increases came from the' United Kingdom, British South Africa, British West Africa, British East Africa, Bermuda, British India, Ceylon, Straits ' Settlements, British Guiana, British West Indies, Hong Kong, Newfoundland, Australia and New Zealand. < , , ■ The Manufacturers’ Association also produced evidence that total Canadian exports to Empire countries last- year represented about half the exports to all countries. Compared with Empire exports for the 12 ‘ months ending .July, 1932— the year before the .Ottawa agreements were negotiated—this was equivalent to an increase of more than 100,000,006 dollars (£20,000,000).
