TOUR NEAR CONCLUSION
DUKE’S STAY IN VICTORIA DEPARTURE TO TASMANIA CAR IN TRAFFIC TANGLE HELPLESSNESS OF POLICE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 12. The Duke of Gloucester’s Victorian visit is now ending. To-day was spent on a country tour, including Bendigo and Shepparton. The Duke will return this evening, when he will board the Sussex for Tasmania. He will revisit Victoria for the 100th anniversary celebration at Portland, the oldest settlement in the State.
While en route to the air pageant at Laverton on Saturday the Duke experienced the worst traffic jamb known in Geelong Road. Tire Royal car was frequently forced off the road by a tangle of hundreds of cars. The police were powerless to relieve the congestion. The Royal car was forced to take its place in the general procession. While staying at Ercildoune the Duke was greatly interested in Australian terriers owned by Major Currie, and expressed a desire to take some to England for breeding. On Saturday he visited a breeder and bought two pups. Explaining why he was late on arriving at a Soldiers’ League dinner, the Duke said he had been “to see a man about a dog,” Australia defeated Britain in the second series of singles matches in the international golf contest in connection with the centenary. New Zealand bowlers were in good form to-day when the rink championship of the centenary carnival was begun. Hunt’s team defeated Gleniris by 22 points to 10.
