OLD BOYS SUCCEED AGAIN DUKE PLAYS FINE INNINGS STRATFORD’S DISMAL SCORING After confining Old Boys to the moderate total of 112 at Hawera on Saturday Stratford failed dismally in its strike, mustering the poor score of 54. Thrush was the chief obstacle to suecess, the tall bowler taking five wickets for 18 runs by excellent bowling. For the second time within two weeks the inconsistent Old Boys team was saved by L. Duke, the promising batsman of the team. In a splendidly-made 40 Duke hit six boundaries and defied the bowling in excellent style. Beamish, with 19, was the only other batsman to score well, and apart from H. Barker’s 13 the total was made up of poor figures. Stan Lay, former Taranaki representative, who made a reappearance on Saturday, was chiefly responsible for the bowling of the Stratford team, and his sensational clean-bowling of W. Barker for 4 gave Stratford a chance which was not taken advantage of. Lay developed a good deal of pace and was difficult at all times. Lay did his bit in Stratford’s reply, but too few of the other batsmen followed suit. Walker, who bowled really well without luck, made a strong stand as opening batsman, and Gatton helped Lay a little. Apart from the three, the highest scorer was Barlow, with 3. Both Thrush and Herbert bowled excellently. Details are:— OLD BOYS. W. Barker, b Lay * H.
