Two youthful followers of Guy Fawkes at Hawera are regretting their attachment to gunpowder. On Sunday they made a large - bomb, and, having lit it, retired to a safe distance to watch the effects. Nothing happened, so they returned, and at the psychological moment when the bomb exploded their heads were just above it. Disaster to their eyes was narrowly averted, but both bear bandages on their faces as a result of their indiscretion. Patea Band Entertains.
An excellent programme was presented by the Patea Municipal Band at the town hall on Sunday under the conductorship of Mr. Magrath. The band was assisted by the Misses Knowles and A. Hall, Kakaramea. The concert, which was the first Sunday performance in the band’s campaign for funds to purchase new instruments, was notable for its high musical standard and its versatility. The playing of “Abide With Me” and “Sun of My Soul,” in contrast to the lighter and more vivacious tunes, made pleasing variety. Selections were given on some of the instruments which the band desires to purchase.
