MANAIA TOWN BOARD

REGISTRATION OF TOWN COWS. HAWKERS’ LICENSE FEES. 1 The Manaia Town Board’s monthly meeting, presided over by Cr. L. C. Harrison, was held on Thursday. There were also present: Commissioners G. R. Watts, A. J. Christie, L. A. Walters, J. A. Cosgrove, H. Mead and W. H. Robinson. The treasurer’s report showed £296 19s 4d revenue for the month. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £96 14s 3d. The overdraft at the bank was shown’ at £92 19s. It was resolved that the rules governing registration of cows permitted to graze on the roads in the town be revised, so that no householder should have more than four registered cows or for any person to register a cow unless he was going to milk it on his own property. The board was not satisfied with the present distribution of tags for registered cows, as it had been shown the system was open to abuse. A new arrangement was decided upon. The previous arrangement made for adding 10 per cent, to all overdue accounts 'wherever possible was rescinded and in future 10 per cent, is to be added to all extraordinary water supply accounts only, not paid on or before six weeks from date account is rendered. It was decided that small accounts must be paid immediately, and no credit be given for these sums. A suggestion was received that the board adopt a head-in parking system on an angle of 45 degrees for cars in the main street, but after discussipn the matter was deferred. The question of itinerant tradesmen visiting the town was discussed at length. It was resolved that hawkers’ licenses be increased to 7s 6d per day, and the foreman be appointed inspector to see that no hawker enters the town to carry on his trade unless he has previously obtained a license from the clerk. It was suggested that the cooperation of householders in notifying the inspector of hawkers without licenses would be helpful and facilitate the carrying of this regulation into effect.

, EXCELLENT ENTRIES. HAWERA SHOW CLASSES. Such excellent entries have been received for the Egmont A. and P. Association’s summer show, to be held on /November 14 and 15, that it has been found necessary to extend the closing until 9 p.m. on Thursday. In certain sections the entries at present are close to records for the show. There are 402 well endowed classes in the show, and in each section there is a valuable points prize to be won outright. There are several North Island championships to be competed for. Opinion of the show in outside centres is well shown by the fact that yesterday the secretary, Mr. R. McCoy, received a ring from Waipukurau and a wellknown breeder intimated his intention to bring a large number of his horses to the show. The entries in the sheep section are outstanding, and the volume of the entries kept the secretary and staff busily engaged during the week-end. The necessity of printing the catalogue, which will be much larger than usual, enforces the closing of entries on Thursday night.

GUY-FAWKES DAY. HAWERA CELEBRATIONS. Guy Fawkes Day of gunpowder and shot was fittingly demonstrated by the young idea of Hawera yesterday, and shopkeepers reported better sales of fireworks than for some years. As far as personal endeavour was concerned, the youth of the town gave a remarkable display of consistent advertising, and on Saturday and yesterday salesmen in the streets eagerly solicited support. One feature of the day was the small amount of Chinese fireworks sold. At night skyrockets, Roman candles and the rest were set alight with the greatest enthusiasm.
