RAILWAY PORTER
MATIERE REQUEST GRANTED. WOOL AND FAT LAMB SEASON. The endeavours of the settlers of Maitiere and Otangiwai to secure a resident porter at the Matiere station are soon to be rewarded, as advice has been received that a porter will be stationed at Matiere about the middle of November. He will remain throughout the wool and fat lamb seasons and, if the amount of work warrants it, he will probably remain even longer. Cricket News.
Rain caused a postponement of cricket on Sunday and the visit of the Matiere club to Ohura had to be put back a week. Throughout the season five members of the Matiere club will play for the Ongarue Cricket Club in the Taumarunui centre’s Saturday afternoon competitions. Their game should improve considerably, with matches on both Saturdays and Sundays. Arrangements have not yet been completed for a Sunday competition in the Ohura district, but in the meantime the four local teams are practising assiduously.
Flag Five Hundred Evening. The final flag five hundred evening of the season was held in the hall by the Matiere Church of England committee on Tuesday. There was a record attendance of about 70, including over 20 from Otangiwai. Misses E. McDougall and M. Rutherford and Messrs. G. Rutherford and C. Baker again won the .first prizes with a table of 22 flags. Two tables tied for the consolation prize, that of Mesdames A. K. Margan and F. Pleasants, Miss E. Gray and Mr. A. K. Margan eventually winning from Mesdames Luckman and A. Taylor and Messrs. J. Baker and W. Raitt. After supper Mrs. Owen and Mrs. Stoddart (piano) and Mr. Colee (violin) provided music for dancing. Mr. J. Turner was master of ceremonies. A challenge to a flag five hundred tournament was issued to the Otangiwai people by the Matiere players, and it was decided to hold this in the Otangiwai hall on November 9, with a return match at Matiere. All profits from the two evenings are to be given to the Ohura show funds. Mr. F. Pleasants conducted the card evening. 1
Personals. Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Evans and family, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Fauchelle, Otangiwai, have returned to Feilding. Mr. D. Mackay, agricultural inspector, visited the schools of the district last week.
PLAZA, STRATFORD. “BULLDOG DRUMMOND” TO-DAY. Nothing so thrilling has been seen for years as “The Return of Bulldog Drummond,” -an action-packed screen adaptation of “Sapper’s” story “Black Gang,” which comes to the Plaza Theatre today at the matinee session. Possessing all the thrills to be expected of a Drummond story, it relates the hero’s adventures in his final encounter with his arch-enemy, Carl Petersen, who, as usual, supplies a full quota of villainies. A special feature of the production is its amazing realism. The dare-devil Drummond (convincingly interpreted by Ralph Richardson) had fallen into the hands of a political gang, which placed him under a paralysing drug, and seating him in a huge Bentley car sent it hurtling over an open drawbridge into a river. The big supporting cast of “The Return of Bulldog Drummond” is headed by Ann Todd and Claud Allister as “Algy.”
ELTHAM TALKIES. “TAKE A CHANCE.” Patrons of the Eltham Talkies to-night and to-morrow night will be pleased with the presentation of “Take a Chance,” the picturisation of the famous musical comedy stage hit. It is a gay bit of nonsense concerning the careers of four entertainers who become tired of small-town life and decide to snatch fame and fortune on Broadway. Its scenes ’range all the way from a carnival side-show, through a swanky gambling club, out to the homes of the socially elite on Long Island and back to Broadway. Beautiful music, beautiful girls, outstanding work by the all-star cast and a strong story full of thrills, laughter and comedy are carefully blended into a picture that is a pleasure io sit through.
