Mrs. L. M. Stephenson has returned from a holiday spent at Auckland. Mrs. C. Richards left for Auckland on Monday to bid farewell to her daughter, Miss Mae Richards, who sailed on the Mariposa for Sydney. Mrs. J. G. Brash, who is to leave for Auckland shortly, was entertained at a well-attended farewell gathering of friends at the Chequers tearooms on Wednesday afternoon. Musical and elocutionary items were given by Mesdames Putt and H. Avery and Misses Abbott and McPhillips. Mrs. G. Champion made a presentation to Mrs. Brash. A competition was won by Mrs. J. T. White. Visitors to New Plymouth who have stayed at the Hotel Criterion during the week have been Mrs. F. S. Goldingham, Palmerston North; Miss M. E. Cooper, New York; Mrs. Leith Napier, Auckland; Mrs. Rolland Reid, Wellington; Mrs. W. J. Day, Palmerston North; Mrs. L. Parsons, Wanganui; Mrs. V. C. Black, Sydney; Mrs. A. J. Kellow, Feilding; Mrs. Hay, Mrs. Turner, Christchurch; Mrs. Moody and Miss J. Moody, Auckland; Mrs. Frank A. Webb, Invercargill. There was a large gathering at the Bell Block hall on Saturday evening when a complimentary gift evening was tendered Miss Mavis Holmes, whose marriage takes place shortly. The evening was spent in dancing, songs by Mrs. W. Holmes and Mr. J. D. Aitken, and community singing led by Mrs. Holmes. Music for the dance was played by Mrs. Brittenden, Mrs. W. Hoskin and Mr. Hills. Mr. R. Hoskin was master of ceremonies. After supper Mr. L. J. Rundle asked Miss Holmes to accept the numerous parcels with the best wishes of all present. He mentioned that Miss Holmes had spent most of her life in the district. She had captained the basketball team when it won the school s championship. Miss Holmes had always helped local organisations in any way possible until her departure from the district just over two years ago. Mr. Arnold Young returned thanks on behalf of Miss, Holmes.
