PATEA BOWLING CLUB

OPENING DAY OF THE SEASON. LARGE NUMBER OF VISITORS. Bowlers from Hawera, Park (Hawera), and Waverley clubs assembled in force with Patea bowlers for the opening of the Patea Club’s season at Patea yesterday. Fine weather prevailed and the green was in excellent order, as a result of the efforts of the greenwarden (Mr. W. White) and the greenkeeper (Mr. W. T. Lamb). The visitors were welcomed by the president, Mr. R. S. Scown, who thanked the women for their efforts on behalf of the club. On behalf of the Taranaki Bowling Centre, Mr. F. E. Clarke extended greetings and hopes for a successful season. He congratulated the club upon having as a member the South Taranaki singles champion, Mr. P. Bourke, and congratulated Mr. Bourke on behalf of the centre. Mrs. Scown threw the first jack and Mr. A. T. Christensen, the oldest member present, the first bowl.

ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES. DEATH OF MRS. M. A. OLD, HAWERA Another link with the early days of settlement in South Taranaki was severed by the death yesterday at Hawera at the age of 75 years of Mrs. Mary Annie Old, relict of the late Mr. Frederick Old. The late Mrs. Old had been ill for some, time and her death was no; altogether unexpected. She was a sister of the late Mr. Robert Hicks, who died some weeks ago, and lived for many years before and after her marriage in various parts of South Taranaki. For about 20 years Mr. and Mrs. Old fanned at Sentry Hill, near Waitara, before coming to Hawera to live about 14. years ago. Mrs. Old was bom at Wanganui. < Mr. and Mrs. Old had 14 children, of whom there are now living Mesdame* H. Wells (Whareroa), W. Welham (Manaia), H. Sarten (Tikorangi), Miss M, Old (Hamilton), Messrs C., R. and H. Old (Hawera), A. J. Old (Sentry Hill), and G. R. Old (Puniho). There , are'2o grandchildren and two great-grandchild-ren. / *
