BEAUTY OF TULIPS

NEW PLYMOUTH DISPLAYS. FINE BED OF YELLOW BLOOMS. The beauty of tulip time at New Plymouth this year cannot pass unnoticed, for apart from the splendid specimens seen in private gardens there are beds laid out at Pukekpra Park and Brooklands which are now at their best, even the heavy rains having done less damage than might have been expected. Situated close to the fernery, the bed at Pukekura Park is made up of about 400 fine healthy plants of the rare Earl Kitchener variety. The tulips were imported from Holland and were to have been near to black in toning. Unfortunately they have not flowered true and the superintendent, Mr. T. Horton, is disappointed with the results. Even the two dozen or so black flowers, he says, are not as dark as they should be. Nevertheless, to the uninitiated the bed makes a magnificent spectacle and some of the shades are lovely. At Brooklands a small bed of yellow and red tulips have just passed the prime, but farther on near the greenhouses a second one approaches perfection. There are a few dark pink blooms but the majority, which have petals almost double the normal length, are a rich shade of yellow, deeper than lemon.
