WORK IN BOROUGH

NEW PLYMOUTH IMPROVEMENTS. REPORTS TO COUNCIL MEETING. New Plymouth Borough Council employees have had a busy month effecting road improvements. At the monthly meeting of the council last night the 'borough engineer, Mr. C. Clarke, reported upon the work. The following streets had been metalled: Holdsworthy Road from Ballance Street to Carrington Road; Parsons Lane off Carrington Road; Glen Almond Street; Dorset Avenue extension; Waimea Street, oyer culvert; corner of Brois Street and Govett Avenue. Kerbing and channelling had been completed in Holdsworthy Road from Carrington Road to Ballance Street on the south side; Glen Road, five chains the south end, and McLean Street, the latter work being still in progress. Considerable work in the formation and gravelling of footpaths had already been done in the borough. ' i On the recommendation of the works committee the borough engineer was authorised to effect temporary repairs to Brooklands Road and was instructed to submit a report and estimate of cost of constructing a marine parade along the seafront from Waimanu Street to the East End bathing reserve, and a report and estimate of cost of surface sealing Brougham Street from Fulford Street south and Fulford Street east of Brougham Street. In his monthly report Mr. W. H. Huggett, electrical engineer, reported that linesmen had been engaged on small extensions and had completed the 220011,000 volt change-over, and on general tines overhaul. The number of new installations, additions and alterations dealt with by the inspection department was 95. The maximum load recorded at the power station was 3500 k.w. and the greatest number of units supplied in any one day 50,350, with a total of 1,335,900, including 322,400 (supplied by the Public Works Department) for the month, against 2900 k.w. and 48,200 and 1,354,791 units for the corresponding period of last year. Reporting on the activity of the tramways department, Mr. G. J. Wyatt said the service operated throughout the month with no delay. The revenue earned during the month, £lO5B 4s 9d, showed a decrease of £l9 15s lid on the figures for the corresponding month of last year, and the passengers carried, 135,159, a decrease of 4245 over the same period. There was no question that the lack of shipping at the port and the fact that a warship was in port this month last year had been responsible for the small drop. Cars were being overhauled and paint work renovated. The bus revenue earned during the month, £241 4s 9d, showed an increase of £25 8s 2d on the figures for the corresponding month of last year, and the passengers carried, 26,422, an increase of 1619 over the same period. The new vehicles were operating economically. The Municipal Association reported that 101 replies had been received to the question of whether councils were in favour of the remission of half rates on dwellings unoccupied for six months in a rating year. The result showed that a majority was in favour of the remission being granted where rating was on either the annual or capital value, but that there was a large majority against the remission being allowed where the rates were levied on the unimproved value. The finance committee reported it had c fl.if erred with Messrs. F. Amoore, Smith and L. Lovell in regard to the financial position of the Egmont National Park Board on the question of how the board could meet the interest and sinking fund charges on the £3500 Egmont National Park loan guaranteed by the council. Further consideration was deferred to enable the committee to confer with the Hon. Jas. McLeod, M.L.C., and Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., at the next week-end. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour), Crs. F .S. Grayling, F. Amoore, T. P. Anderson, P. E. Stainton, J. W. Darby, J. Brown and S. J. Smith.
