The jury returned a verdict of not guilty in the case against Mrs. Charlotte Fowler, who was charged with the murder of John Ryan at Barry, near Bath? urst. Mrs. Fowler was discharged.

Ryan, aged 79, a retired fanner, was found dead in a sitting posture in an armchair in an isolated cottage where he lived by himself on his son’s property. Detectives ascertained that Mr. Ryan was formerly a wealthy man. He sold a large portion of his. property to his two sons at a nominal figure, but the residue of the property disappeared by unaccountable means. The bullet wound in Mr. Ryan’s head disclosed that th? shot was at fairly close range, possibly while he was asleep in front of the fire,
