MUSIC AT ST. MARY’S

LAST NIGHT’S RECITAL. Two of Dvorak’s compositions and a pleasing Ave Maria by Jacob Arcadelt were chosen by Mr. R. N. Renaud, organist of St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, for the recital that followed evensong last night. The first work was the well-known Largo from Dvorak’s symphonies with its charming theme woven throughout and a middle movement to give grace to the earlier and later passages. The second Dvorak composition and the concluding item of the recital was an exhilarating work written originally as a pianoforte duet and arranged for the organ by E. H. Lemare. It was a refreshing and inspiring close to a delightful programme, for the simplicity of the Ave Maria, a composition of the early Netherlands school, was an excellent contrast to the thrill and the vigour of the second Dvorak work chosen. The recital was enriched by the solos “The Lord is Mindful” (St. Paul) and "O Rest in the Lord” (Elijah) in which Mrs. Sunderland’s rich contralto voice was heard to great advantage. The recital as a whole was one of the best of the aeries with which Mr. Renaud has favoured the parish.
