Mrs. R. Strachan was “at home” on Friday afternoon. Mrs. B. Reynolds is a visitor to Toko and is the guest Of Mrs. Evan Jones. Mrs. N. Wills was “at home” on Fri day afternoon. Mrs. G. L. Butler is holiday-making at Wellington.

Miss R. Manoy has returned from a business trip to Auckland. Mrs. Bodie entertained friends during the week.

Miss K. Smart has left for Australia to attend the centenary celebrations.

Miss Belle McKay is an inmate of the public hospital. Mrs. N. H. Moss is spending a short holiday at Rotorua.

Mrs. A. Guthrie is spending a holiday at Christchurch.

Mrs. Jenkin left on Friday morning for Taumaranui, to visit her son/ who is ill.' Miss B. Watson is an inmate of the public hospital, where she is recovering from an operation. The Misses Cartwright entertained the Little Theatre players’ reading circle at their home during the week. Miss Mary Samson, Dunedin, Mrs. M. F. Brown, Christchurch, and Mrs. G. F. Lomas, Wanganui, sisters of Mrs. W. Pastier, have been recent visitors to Stratford.

The Portland bridge club was entertained by Mrs. J. Spence on Tuesday afternoon, those present being Mesdames E. Jeffries, A. Coleman, D. Malone, L. Furrie, R. Curtis, J. Cresswell, L. Jardine.

Mrs. S. Lay entertained some of her friends at an enjoyable afternoon tea party on Wednesday. Present were Mesdames E. - Carryer, R. Strachan, W. Hall, G. Johnson, C. Campbell, A. White, N. Wills and R. Whitcross.

Mrs. R. Strachan entertained friends on Thursday afternoon. Those present were Mesdames L. Wynyard, Bellringer, Von Sturmer, R. Carryer, Bodie, K. Pegg, Vincent, Miss H. Hoole. Miss Nora Thorpe gave a morning tea party on Wednesday for Miss Nora Spence, Auckland. Some of those present were Mesdames M. Thorpe, J. Spence, N. Green, Jolly, Lyons, F. Uniacke, Roberton, Yamdly, E. Rutherfurd, D. Morris, North, McLean, McDonald, Misses C. Uniacke, J. Coleman, Malone. Mrs. Blick gave an enjoyable bridge party on Friday afternoon to raise funds for the Stratford Croquet Club. Tire prize for the highest score was won by Mrs. R. Carryer. Those present were Mesdames Shannon, Batten, Sole, Cooper, Harris, Allen, McMillan, Hillock, T. Weston, R. Carryer and Hathaway, Rawles, and Miss M. McMillan.

Some of those at the Catholic euchre party and dance on Wednesday night were Mesdames Davis, Smeath, Groshinski, M. McDonald, P. Kovaleski, Adlam, J. An afternoon was spent at the residence of Mrs. W. Wickham, Bird Road, on Wednesday afternoon, when a garden party to raise funds for the Plunket Society was held. The gardens were much admired and a bed of tulips was the centre of much attention. Those present included Mesdames W. Wickham, A. J. Smith, A. D. Walker, D. Shannon, Bulner, O’Neil, Slattery, J. Aitkin, Coldwell, Craig, E. Bennet, I. Orr, L. Wickham, Holland, R. Smith, P. Thomson, Fredric, L. Furrie, Smeath, Villers, O’Sullivan, Cuthbert, J. C. Allen, Rawles, Reith, H. Bishop, Dimes, Urwin, Rowe, Harrison, senr., Harrison, Tyrer, HardyJones, Anderson, Misses Wickham, P. Brown, Gemhoefer, Marfell, I. Brown, F. Walker. The Foresters’ Hall was filled on Thursday night when the Stratford Technical High School Old Pupils’ Association held an enjoyable dance. Vinsen’s Ambassadors supplied the music and extras were played by Mrs. Attrill and Mrs. Marsh. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss K. Dixon and Mr. Howse. Carman. AVON CROQUET OPENING. Perfect weather attended the opening of the Avon Croquet Club on Thursday afternoon. The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs. R. Masters. Members and friends were welcomed by the president, Mrs. Alger. Competitions were held and won by Mesdames Spragg (Hawera), Knight and Murdoch. Some of those present were Mesdames R. Masters, Alger, Jenkin, Foster, Lampshire, A. Moss, Burton, Coldwell, Clark, Burgess, Hillock, Seddon, T. Short, C. Moore, Rogers, Buckley, Macßae, Lamplough, Coward, Knight, Burke, Robson, McDonald, Von Stunner, Galbraith, Marsh, Collingwood, Bullman, Harkness, Cook, Batten, Fitness, Stavely, B. Vinsen, Hall, Murdoch, Moorhouse, Max, Kleeman, Wisneski, Dickenson, White, Hughs (Hawera visitors), Exley, Roy Crutch, Spragg, Misses R. Patterson, H. Henry, Hall. STRATFORD FORTY SOCIAL CLUB. Members of the Forty Social Club were entertained at an evening in the Masonic hall on Tuesday, when Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Cooper were hostesses. Mrs. Cooper wore a frock of black ring velvet with a figured velvet coatee, while Mrs. Armstrong" was dressed in a frock of black lace with a satin bow, and a black lace cape. The evening was spent in dancing and songs, the songs being sung by Mrs. Harris, Mr. North and Dr. Armstrong. Accompaniments were played by Mrs. A. R. Masters. Music for dancing was supplied by the Thistle Orchestra. Among those present were Mesdames Armstrong, Cooper, North, A. R. Masters, Macßae, Harris, Stephens, Petrie, Batten.
