BAND CONTEST HELD

CANTERBURY PROVINCIAL EVENT. ELEVEN BANDS IN COMPETITION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night, The Canterbury provincial band contest was held at Geraldine on Saturday. Five bands competed in the B and C grades and six in the Highland pipe section. Mr. J. Dixon, Dunedin, judged the brass section and Mr. D. McKechnie the pipe section. Results are:— Quickstep. B grade: Ashburton Silver, 261, 1; Christchurch Municipal, 252 J, 2. C grade: Timaru Municipal Junior, 2501, 1; Geraldine District, 241, 2; Ellesmere Brass, 2294, 3.' Test Selection. B grade: Ashburton Silver, 87, 1; Christchurch Municipal, 85, 2. C grade: Timaru Municipal Junior, 90, 1; Geraldine District, 82, 2; Ellesmere Brass, 78, 3. Pipe Band Section. Quickstep: Ashburton County Pipe Band, 170}, 1; Scottish Society of New Zealand (Christchurch), 169 J, 2; Temuka Pipe’ Band, 164 J, 3. Test selection: Timaru Highland, 92, 1; Scottish Society of New Zealand Band, 92, 2; Ashburton County, 83, 3. With a handicap the Timaru Highland Band won the Ashburton County Scottish Society Shield with 3431 points. The Scottish Society of New Zealand Band was second with 343.
