SHIP RETURNS FIRE
TURKS SHOOT AT FRENCH VESSELS. *■ NAVAL INCIDENT OFF SMYRNA. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 1.15 a.m. Istanbul, Oct. 7. Turkish coastal batteries opened fire on two French destroyers steaming in the Smyrna Gulf. The destroyers returned the fire. The French Embassy is demanding an explanation. The destroyers, the Cassard and the Guepard, were going to Istanbul after a visit to Greek waters and applied for permission to visit Smyrna. Turkey refused as Smyrna is a fortified area. It is unknown whether there were casualties on either side.
