ORDER FOR RETURN

MINISTER’S DOCUMENTS ALL IN OFFICE SINCE 1919 SURPRISE DEMAND MADE THOSE CONCERNED ANGRY By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. London, Oct. 5. Downing Street has ordered every member of Cabinet who has held office since 1919 to surrender instantly all documents in their possession, the NewsChronicle understands. Where Ministers have died since 1919 the request has been made to their executors.

The sudden and unexpected demand has puzzled and angered the ex-Minis-ters concerned, some of whom see in the move an attempt to muzzle criticism of the complicated political moves of 1931.

Others believe it is intended to prevent former members $f Cabinet using official documents for the purpose of memoirs and newspaper articles. An old established tradition allows members of Cabinet to keep a complete copy of all official documents, with which they dealt.
