FATAL RIOTING
STRIKERS AT MADRID STOPPAGE OF TRANSPORT STRIKERS FIGHT POLICE WORKERS DISSATISFIED NEW FORMATION By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. Madrid, Oct. 5. Rioting and strikes at Madrid and other cities in Spain have accompanied the formation of a new Cabinet by Senor Lerroux. Three were killed and seven seriously injured in fighting between National Guards and strikers. Four hundred persons were arrested.
The police raided several houses in the working class suburb of Prosperidad, one of which was found to be a veritable armoury.
A general strike began at midnight at Madrid. Taxis and trams ceased running. It is expected the railways will ,be brought to a standstill and that the stoppage of all activities controlled by the- Socialist trade unions will be complete throughout the country by the morning. Waiters stopped work in the cafes at midnight. Guards surround public buildings and factories. A censorship has been imposed on telegrams, telephone exchanges and radio stations.
Police raided a secret meeting in a suburb and were met by a volley of rifle fire. A policeman was killed and 63 arrests were made.
Strikes are operating at Barcelona, Badajoz and Corboda. The new Cabinet of Senor Lerroux includes three Catholics, one of whom is Minister of Agriculture. The ex-Premier, Senor Samper, will take the Foreign Affairs portfolio. Senor Alonso, whose stern measures for public order were resented, jdisappears. from the Cabinet. ’ President Zamora’s wish for a majority Cabinet has been realised, but this does not mean that the country is pacified. The Left Republican leaders met and decided to break all relations with President Zamora owing to the inclusion of Catholics.
