Checked Linens,

The new check linens are as smart as it is possible for any material to be, providing they are made up properly in tailored style. The check vogue, started by a famous designer who .used the pattern in taffetas, was bound to spread to other materials. And, since heavy linen is one of the fabrics of the moment, it follows that this also must show the chequer-board design or else be squared up with fine lines. A very neat little odd coat has been made of navy and white check linen. It is quite plain, short-sleeved and collarless and.it has a straight piece of the linen attached to the back at the shoulder line like a cape. The cape is rather longer than the jacket itself which is only hip-length. The model was shown with a plain white wool-and-silk mixture dress, finished at the throat with scarf and bow of crisp white organdi. The idea of wearing a linen coat with a woolly frock may seem rather surprising. But quite a number of dress shows have included two-piece suits comprising frock of fine jersey material and coat of heavy linen. Because the new linens have a certain warmth and weight, they are firm in weave, and the colours in which they are produced make them quite suitable for wear on dull days. You could not feel very cold, even with an East wind blowing, if you had wrapped yourself in a deep blue linen coat, or one in dull red, or rich russet brown.
