MIGHT HAVE BEEN SERIOUS
SPINAL MENINGITIS OUTBREAK.
NOW NO FEAR OF ITS SPREAD.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Gisborne, Sept. 17.
There is now no danger of the cerebro spinal meningitis outbreak in the Tolaga Bay district spreading. The isolation of two households has been lifted, and it is hoped that the same course will be taken with the other by to-morrow. It is expected that the three patients in hospital will recover. These points were mentioned by Dr. H. B. Turbott, medical officer of health, who returned from the coast during the week-end. Swabs taken from contacts were negative with the exception of two, which were doubtful. It was fortunate, Dr. Turbott added, that the outbreak occurred in an isolated country district, for the disease appeared in a virulent form which might easily have turned to a serious epidemic had the cases occurred in a thickly populated area.
