VISIT OF OUTSIDE FIFTEENS JUNIORS BEAT JOHNSONVILLE. WANGANUI MARIST FOURTHS LOSE Football fifteens from Wellington and Wanganui were seen in action at Hawera on Saturday against two Hawera junior grade teams. Johnsonville (Wellington) junior A team paid its annual visit and played Hawera first juniors, the home team winning by 25 points to nine. Wanganui Marist fourth grade was beaten by Hawera fourths, 15—6. Play was affected to a certain extent by a wind blowing straight down the field which gave a decided advantage .to the teams playing with it in each half. There were not many spectators. The Johnsonville team, and supporters, all travelling in one large bus under the management of Mr. F. Jacobs, arrived at four o’cldck on Saturday morning. Both visiting teams were entertained at a dance at Hawera on Saturday night and the Wellington team returned home yesterday afternoon. Hawera juniors scored the majority of their points in the first spell—five tries and a penalty goal. Johnsonville failed to play the correct game, kicking high against the wind many times when it would havte paid to have kept the ball on the ground at all costs. Johnsonville improved in the second spell and scored nine points to Hawera’s five. For.Hawera Lendrum played a firstclass game at half and O’Dea and Harrington were two good Brown, Butchart and Hayman were thp best forwards. Hall, B. McClelland and Halliwell were the best Johnsonville backs and Seiwood, filling a gap, revealed some of his dribbling capabilities. The teams were:— Johnsonville: Sinclair, Smith, Halliwell, Standridge, B. McClelland, W. McClelland, Hall, Masterton, Richardson, Gillespie, Laurie, Janes, Seiwood, Hunter, Engle. Hawera: McDonald, Clapham, Stratton, O. Brown, O’Dea, Harrington, Lendrum, Smith, Young," West, Honeyfield, Rawcliffe, Butchart, Appleyard, Hayman. Hawera kicked off with the help of the south-easterly wind and were soon contesting a five-yard scrum. Johnsonville’s back line was breaking down and a high kick by Hawera found Stratton and Harrington worrying Sinclair, and Harrington went across for a try. Good work by Harrington gave the fiveeighth another try soon afterwards, which Hayman converted, and then Hall led a Johnsonville rush which only just failed. Johnsonville had to force twice and then Hawera was awarded a free-kick close to the goal. Hayman made rio mistake. Hawera was still attacking and Butchart joined in a passing rush to score. Hayman missed with the kick. Rawcliffe was injured and went to the full-back position, Brown going into the forwards and McDonald to the wing. Johnsonville persisted in trying to kick into the wind, neglecting forward play, and Hawera was consistently attacking. Lendrum capped a series of good efforts by a solo run which Brown crowned by running round behind the posts. Hayman missed with the kick. The next try came to O’Dea after Harrington had made an opening. McDonald missed the conversion. Half-time arrived with Hawera leading by 20 to nil. There was a different tale at the beginning of the second spell. Johnsonville attacked and Hall narrowly missed with a penalty kick. The visitors’ backs went away close to the goal line and Halliwell scored a good try. Hall missed with the kick. Seiwood' shone in a dribbling rush and then six Johnsonville players went away in a passing rush from half-way. that ended with a try to Halliwell in the comer. Hall could not convert. Hall had another penalty kick and increased the score to nine, leaving Hawera eight points ahead. Hawera forced twice and then O’Dea ran from his own twenty-five to within five yards of a try before he was tackled. McDonald was responsible for the next try with a twisty run from a scrum, handing on to Hayman for the forward to score. Clapham. converted. The match ended with the score: Hawera 25, Johnsonville 9. Mr. S. Hunt refereed. SUPERIORITY IN FOURTHS. Hawera fourths showed a superiority even against the wind in the first spell and was definitely the better team. The teams were:—

Wrigley kicked a penalty goal for Marist and Oakes retaliated for Hawera with two unconverted tries as the result of good passing rushes. In the second spell Hawera had much the better of play, Jones, Evans and Hurley adding, tries, none of which was converted. Benefield scored a try for Marist at the end of the game, and the score was: Hawera 15, Wanganui Marist. 6. Mr. A. E, Stevens refereed.
