MOKOIA WINS AT CRICKET

FRIENDLY CONTEST AT MOKOIA. VISIT FROM OLD COLLEGIANS. Mokoia won a friendly cricket match with Old Collegians at Mokoia in the week-end. Weather conditions were perfect and a grass wicket was used. Old Collegians batted -first, but Sanson was the only batsman to stay at the wickets any time, none of the team having handled a bat previously this season. The total was 65 and of this Sanson made 19 and Howard 11, the latter score being made in three hits. N. Hawken took three wickets for 18, Walsh four for 24, Percy one for 1, and Kibblewaite two for 7. Mokoia passed Old Collegians’ score for the loss of six wickets, but the last few wickets fell cheaply and the side was out for 85. Kibblewaite made 19 and Newey 12, and towards the end of the innings Dunn passed the other team’s total to score 17 not out. D. Hughes took two for 4, J. West three for 6, Howard two for 4 and J. C. Bayly two for 12. Old Collegians had a second strike and opened out, the total being 65 for five wickets when stumps were drawn. Clayton made 29 and D. Hughes 10. The wickets fell to N. Hawken, who took three for 4, and Percy, whose average was two for 20. PERSONAL ITEMS.

Master Louis Fox, a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. A. Fox, Hawera, has, according to advice received, gained three certificates of high merit for violin playing at the City of Sydney Eisteddfod since he went to Sydney Conservatorium a few weeks ago to further his studies. He competed in three violin championships against 65 competitors from many parts of Australia, including L.A.B.’s and the first violin of the Conservatorium orchestra, who were unplaced. Roff Barclay, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Barclay, Okaiawa, and pupil of Miss Vera Mortimer, passed with distinction in pianoforte grade 1 at the examination Of the Associated Board held at Wanganui last week. PATEA BAND ENTERTAINS. The Patea Municipal Band gave an open air concert' in the Triangle at Patea on Saturday, Mr. J. Magrath conducting. Several members of the band were absent through sickness but a large crowd was entertained with bright selections. The programme tin eluded “Postman’s Parade,” “High School Cadets,” “With Sword and Lance,” “Over the Waves” and “Enchantment.” GENERAL ITEMS. Assistance to Unemployed. Assistance was given to 50 families at Hawera and Normanby on Saturday by the weekly distribution of rations to registered unemployed on stand-down week. The following commodities were issued in sizes according to the number of children in each family: Tea 191 b, sugar 2021 b, flour 3021 b, oatmeal 511 b, sago 131 b, barley 381 b, butter 521 b, cheese 431 b, honey 501 b, potatoes 7001 b, bread 103 loaves. Car-rot-and parsnip seed was also included. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. Miss Doreen Naim advertises that she has recommenced tuition in national dancing at 'her studio, 3 Milmoe Street, Hawera. Pupils of Miss Naim were very successful at the recent Hawera competitions.
