HAWERA WOMEN’S CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. REPORT OF YEAR’S WORKING. A decrease of 11 members to a total of 123 and a small loss on the year’s working were shown in the annual report of the Hawera Women’s Club, presented at the annual meeting in the club rooms on Saturday. Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan presided over one of the best attendances for years, more than 50 members being present. The report further stated that the committee held ten ordinary and one special meeting during the year, the average attendance being nine. The club had entertained Miss C. Leatham’s musical circle, Mrs. G. W. Forbes, Mrs. Baxter, Mrs. Gordon Bryan and Miss Jean Batten, and in March the club members, with Rotary club members, assisted the Mayor’s unemployment relief effort at a gala day in King Edward Park. Mrs. Page represented the club at the conference of Federated Women’s Clubs held at Dunedin, and at the May committee meeting Mrs. Page’s resignation was received with deep regret. Mrs. H. G. Whitehead had acted as secretary until the election of Mrs. Allan Evans on July 3. The work performed by Mrs. Page in aid of the club had been recognised, when she was given a farewell party on May 29 and was unanimously made a life member of the club. The club birthday celebration was held on July 24. The club thanked members for donations, the club orchestra, the play-reading circle, the music circle and Mr. L. O. Hooker for his gramophone recital and the printing of the monthly syllabus. . Reports of the club circles were read. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan; vicepresidents, Misses E. Caplen and E. Burgess and Mrs. J. Houston; committee, Mesdames W. McL’Dowie, D. Lysaght, A. Thomson, G. Duncan, H. G. Whitehead, W. Adams and Misses Corrigan and Buchanan. The retiring committee members were Mesdames H. R. Kemp, Jobson and Woodward. The circle conveners elected were: Play reading, Miss Corrigan; arts and crafts, Mrs. A. E. Stevens; musical, Miss C. Reilly and Mrs. P. O. Veale; discussions and lecturettes, Miss I. N. Glenn. Three new circles were formed, the welfare circle (Mrs. W. F. Buist, convener) to take the place of the now defunct sewing circle; the folk dancing circle (Mrs. Houston) and a sunshine circle (Mrs. H. R. Kemp). KAPONGA football ball. LARGE ATTENDANCE ATTRACTED. THe annual ball of the Kaponga Football Club attracted a large attendance on Friday, visitors being present from Hawera, Normanby, Manaia, Okaiawa, Kapuni, Eltham, Auroa, Riverlea, Mangatoki and Mahoe. The hall was decorated with gold, black and white streamers, and the supper room was arranged with a display of spring blooms. The tables were the work of Mrs. J. H. Tyack and L. A. Wells and the hall decorations were done by Mrs. A. W. Anderson and J. O’Donoghue. Supper was dispensed by a committee consisting of Mesdames I. Evans (convener), J. H. W. Gardner, J. Guy, J. H. Tyack, W. Kehely, W. Carrington, Behl, L. A. Wells and G. Guthrie. Hooker’s Merrymakers’ played modem and old-time music, and extras were given by Misses M. Lilley, U. West, Wilmshurst and Mr. K. Cave. Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr. J. Sexton and Miss Kelly and Mr. S. Wolfe and Miss Rothe, and a competition by Mr. D. Walker. A bobbing dance was won by Mr. Ross and Miss P. Parker. Messrs. W. G. Cran and G. Guthrie were masters of ceremonies. ROAD CYCLING AT PATEA. TRAFFIC DIFFICULTIES MET. The third race of the second series of the Patea Amateur Club’s road cycling season was 'contested over an 11-mile course to Ball Road comer and back on Saturday. Six riders faced the starter, J. McMahon being the first home, followed by V. Railton and C. McKenna in that order. Heavy traffic embarrassed some of the riders, who battled against a steady wind on the return journey, the time for the course being far from the record. The fixture was controlled by Messrs. A. Maule and J. Bates. Details are:— Placings: J. McMahon-443m) 1, V. Railton (scr) 2, C. McKenna (4im) 3. Fastest times: V. Railton 36m 16s, N. Railton 37m 15s, J. McKenna 40m 21s. WEDNESDAY GAMES SUGGESTED. ONE TEAM ASSURED FROM HAWERA. The suggestion has been made that a Wednesday cricket competition could be arranged at Hawera again without any difficulty. The matter was discussed after a friendly game between Mokoia and Hawera Old Collegians, and it was thought that a competition would not be hard to bring into being. A team of Hawera players is definitely available and it was suggested that probably another Hawera team and further elevens from Mokoia-Manutahi and Manaia would be forthcoming. The suggestion is to be placed before the meeting of the South Taranaki division of the Taranaki Cricket Association at its annual meeting and the co-opera-tion enlisted of known enthusiasts of the game.

UNUSUAL PICTURISATION.

“ALICE IN WONDERLAND.”

Unusual in many ways, “Alice in Wonderland” was shown at the Hawera Opera House for the first time on Saturday. All the characters of Lewis Carroll’s delightful story are there, just as one would imagine them, and the picture is sheer delight from beginning to end. With Charlotte Henry as a delightfully sweet Alice, the cast is completed by some of the most famous people of screendom. The Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Red and White Queens, Mr. Rabbit, and all the rest are there, and the succession of scenes, with the dialogue taken almost word for word from the book, build on to the conclusion, when Alice wakes up. The photography is superb. For musical screen entertainment “Alice in Wonderland” is a picture that will please young and old. PORT OF PATEA. September 16:—Arrived: Inaha, m.v., from Wellington. September 17; High water, 4.8 a.m., 4.33 pan.
