RUGBY IN THE CHATHAMS
GAME IN FLOURISHING CONDITION.
HIGH STANDARD OF FOOTBALL.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 13.
Rugby football flourishes on the Chatham Islands, according to a letter received last night by the New Zealand Rugby Union, in which the chairman of the authority controlling the game in the islands expresses his thanks for a gift of three footballs by the New Zealand Union.
Mr. O. A. Holyoake, chairman of the Chatham Islands Rugby Football Union, wrote:—
“I have to thank your union for the gift of three footballs, which have been distributed to the main schools on the island. It may interest you to know that we have lately completed a series of inter-school football tournaments, the standard of play being equally as high as, if not higher than, that for schools of similar grade in New Zealand. We also run a senior championship competition between three teams, play reaching a fair standard. Considerable difficulty is experienced in arranging matches owing to the absence of players in the fishing industry.”
