The biggest gangster trial in India in modern times was concluded in Calcutta, when 10 bandits were sentenced to transportation for life, five to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment, and 19 others to various terms. Altogether there were 37 accused, of whom three turned King’s evidence.

The trial occupied ten months and related to 59 cases of robbery with violence in three provinces. The gang, which was formed from Bihar coal miners in 1919, recruits being gathered from time to time, had an elaborate network of spies and bribed servants.
