ONE REACHES THE FINAL

WOMEN’S GOLF AT SYDNEY NEW ZEALAND IN SEMI-FINALS. MISS KAY NARROWLY DEFEATED. MISS GAISFORD’S GOOD WIN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.25 p.m. Sydney,_ Sept. 10. New Zealand won one semi-final in the women’s golf championship and lost the other. Results are:— Miss B. Gaisford (New Zealand) beat Mrs. Russell (Melbourne) 4 and 2. Mrs. Robinson tNew South Wales) beat Miss O. Kay (New Zealand) 1 up. Miss Kay largely owed her defeat to the number of short putts she missed. Nevertheless her opponent played superb all-round golf. She was accurate on the greens, sinking one 30-footer. Mrs. Robinson gave the impression of going for everything while Miss Kay appeared to be restrained. Both got splendid length with their tee shots, and although their seconds were occasionally poor, they made some wonderful recoveries.

After being two down at the 13th Miss Kay won the 14th, halved the 15th, missed a three-foot putt to lose the 16th and won the 17th. Both were on the green in three at the 18th. They missed short putts, and halved in fives to give the Sydney player the match. Miss Gaisford was too strong for Mrs. Russell. She turned one up, but lost the 10th, where she took three putts and then won the 11th. Mrs. Russell lost the 12th for drying a ball which lodged in a pool of water. Mrs. Gaisford with two halves and two wins took the match at the 16th. She plays Mrs. Robinson in the 36-hole final to-morrow

There is still another defection in the Tasman Cup team as Miss L. Wray is not available. Her place wil’ be filled, by Miss Leslie Bailey, Melbourne, while Mrs. Clive Robinson becomes captain in place of Miss Wray. Miss C. Lascelles replaces Miss Shirley Tolhurst, who is ill.
