INJURIES TO FIREMEN
EXPLOSION IN BURNING SHED. OWNER MAKES HURRIED ESCAPE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Sept. 8. A fire broke out this morning in a shed at the back of Commerce building in Hereford Street through inflammable goods catching alight while a man was mixing turpentine over water. When the brigade arrived it used a chemical mixture. Then the firemen entered the shed. Almost immediately an explosion occurred. Fireman J. Miller was stunned and had to receive treatment. Two other firemen received lesser shocks, in each case their hair and clothing being singed. The blaze was finally extinguished, but a certain amount of stock was destroyed, including printing ink, turpentine and ■polishes valued at £400; The owner is Mr. Douglas A. Adams, indent agent, with offices adjacent. When the outbreak' started he made a hurried exit front the shed, and his hair as well as his clothing was singed.
