MYSTERIOUS SOUNDS HEARD

STATED TO BE SHOTS FROM RIFLE. CARRINGTON ROAD STARTLED. A series of sounds stated by reliable citizens who live in the vicinity of Pukekura Park to be definitely rifle shots was heard at about 1 a.m. yesterday. No complaint has been received by the police, nor is Mr. T. Horton, curator of Pukekura Park, aware of any damage having been done or guns fired in the park. The possibilities of back-firing were investigated, but one resident who was proceeding down Carrington Road at the time and h-ard the sounds said his first thought was to see or hear if there were any motor vehicle about and there was none. He was certain the sounds were the noise of shots from a heavy rifle. Most of the residents who were, interviewed were of the opinion, that the shots came from the direction of Gilbert and Pendarves Street and were given in fairly quick succession with the exception of the last shot, which was fired some minutes afterwards.
