TUKAPA THIRD GRADE WINS
TEAM OF CLUB-MATES DEFEATED. The Tukapa third grade team, winner of the Taranaki championship, defeated the “Rest” of Tukapa by 14-10, as a curtain raiser to the ManakauTukapa match on Saturday. The game was scrappy with flashes of brilliant back play by the winning backs. The forwards were more even than the backs. The “ROst” hooked the ball from the set scrums, but the other forwards were better in the line-outs. The third grade backs did not play up to their usual standard. The wings were starved especially Campbell. White, Spedding and Holtz played well in the backs. In the forwards Van de Water and Andrews were the pick. For the “Rest,” Gilbert, playing at first fiveeighth, was sound, and the forwards Sanger and Kilpatrick were the best. The third grade team scored about 10 minutes after the start. I. Christian worked the blind and sent White over for a try in the corner. Near halfway Gilbert broke through and sent on to Hawkins, who scored under the posts. Jury converted. White kicked high and folowed up, zig-zagging his way over. The try was not converted. Van de Water and Walker headed a forward rush into the Rest territory, and Walker finished of a fine movement with a try. Spedding made no mistake with the kick. About 10 minutes before time the third grade backs took charge. A good movement saw C. Campbell gather a difficult pass near the touch line. He swerved infield and was brought down inches from the flag and the ball rolled into touch. The Rest broke away and Pope scored after a 40 yards’ dash. Jury converted. Spedding earned applause when he stopped a forward rush which looked certain to score. Van de Water broke away and ran for 50 yards before passing to Walker, who scored.
