WIN FOR HAWERA JUNIORS

WANGANUI MARIST TEAM BEATEN. THREE SENIORS IN HOME TEAM. The Hawera junior won a friendly match against Wanganui Marist junior on Saturday at Hawera by 17 points to six, 11 points being scored in the last quarter of an hour. The score was composed of five tries, one convei-ted, to one try and a penalty goal. Wanganui did not arrive until 3.30 owing to a bus breakdown en route and half hour spells were played. Hawera's team was short and three seniors, O. Brown, Butchart and Bishop were played. Hawera led by six to nil at halftime, the points being scored against the wind, Marist equalised in the second spell, but three more tries fell to Hawera, two being particularly fine half-back efforts by Cropp, a St. Patrick’s College trained boy. Brown was also in the thick of the picture for Hawera and Harrington played well in the backs. Corless, Cleary and Dow were the best Marist forwards, and Williams was a good back. The teams were:—

Wanganui Marist: Cronin; Sexton, Williams, Wallace; Morgan, Kirkwood; Richardson; Cook; G. Cleary, B. Cleary, J. Cleary, R.' Martin; Corless (capt.), Dow, Couchman. Hawera: Whareaitu; Gibson, Stratton, Denholm; O’Dea, Harrington; Cropp; Hayman; Young, Bishop, O. Brown, Honeyfield; Appleyard, Butchart, Smith.

Marist kicked off with the southwesterly kind, but hard tackling and quick breaking by Hawera mullified that advantage and Marist’s hooking. Honeyfield scudded over from a scrum near the line but Whareaitu missed the conversion. Marist had a kick at goal from a penalty at half-way and then nearly scored with a loose rush, Cropp saving well. Denholm made a good run down the side-line to score in the comer. Whareaitu did not convert. Half-time sounded with Hawera leading by six to nil. Kirkwood damaged his shoulder when tackled and continued at the full-back position. Cook and Dow led a rush down the line, and Dow picked up over the last two yards to score in the comer. Cronin converted. Hawera offside tactics gave Corless a shot at goal, and he equalised the score. Gibson raised enthusiasm by a run up the line at the end of which he side-stepped one opponent and hurdled another to cross the line. He was recalled, however, for going into' touch. Stratton broke through well, the movement ending in a five-yard scrum. Hawera hooked, and Cropp had plenty of time to go over for a good solo try. Cropp missed the conversion. Williams shone with a brilliant cut-in that had Hawera in a dangerous place, but Brown and Butchart cleared. Hawera scored again, this time with a clear-cut back movement in which Cropp and Harrington made the openings for O’Dea. Cropp converted the try. Marist carried the ball back to' force, and from the five-yard scrum Cropp dived straight through the scrum for a score. The game ended:— Hawera 17 Marist 6 Mr. S. Hunt refereed.
