RAISING TRANSPORT COSTS

OPERATIONS OF TRANSPORT BOARD HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL MEETS. The Hawera County Council, on Saturday decided to support the Wanganui County Council’s view, that the Transport Board was not-functioning in the best interests of the farming community inasmuch as its operations were creating a monopoly with consequent increased costs by eliminating competition in the carriage of goods to and from farms. The local authority was in a much better position to issue licenses, said the chairman, Cr. J. B. Murdoch, in supporting the Wqnganui opinion. Support for Wanganui’s protest insofar as .traffic to centres was concerned was decided upon.

It was decided to allow the Hawera Borough Council to erect sewage pumping stations above ground in Glover Road near Waihi Road, Glover Road near Argyle Street, and South Road near Vogel Street. The council also agreed to'allow the Hawera borough Council to lay a water main in Beach Road ; opposite the abattoir in extension of the existing pipelength (to be laid approximately one chain in length) and to flushing out the ■ main about once a month. . , The engineer (Mr. A. Muggeridge) reported that the authorised metalling of 15 chains on the Whakatau Road had been completed. ■_ There were still 15 chains of clay road to Mr. Corrigan’s gate. The metal for the Katene Road had been delivered. The metal was continuous from the Normanby-Okaiawa Road to the top of the rise in front of Mr. Linn’s property. The Whareroa Road had been scarified where the metal was thickly enough formed and blinded. Other portions had been metalled from Batten’s Pit with .a thin coat, and were being finished off with a light coat of crushed stone in readiness for sealing. The work at the Tongahoe Deviation was going on slowly. Some very bad country was struck on the south side of the bridge. This was an old buried swamp surrounded by papa, and owing to its wet nature had been .yery difficult to get rid of. It was anticipated that this would soon be cut through, and there were signs that the going would be easier in the near future. On the north side of the bridge the work was more satisfactory as it was drier. The going was much’better and the spoil easier to get rid of. Thirty chains of the Fraser Road had been widened with metal from Batten’s Pit. The road .was; very narrow and a drop off the bitumen made it dangerous. The hill on the Glover Road had had the horse track alongside the bitumen attended to and was now in good order. The Main Highways Board’s Taranaki representative, Mr. P. Keller, advised that the board expected to be able to declare a small mileage of new highways. It was therefore proposed to submit for consideration the roads at present on the waiting list for declaration in this district. The list included approximately six and a-half miles of the Ahipaipa and Scott Roads in the Hawera county. Mr. Joseph Mattis, Opeke Downs, congratulated the council qn the work performed on the Maybum Road, Opaku, Patea River. TE KIRI TENNIS CLUB DANCE. PERSONAL • ITEMS OF DISTRICT.
