CENSUS TAKEN ROUND HAWERA.

PRIVATE CARS PREDOMINATE. .. ___— Large totals of road traffic in South Taranaki districts round Hawera were reported to the .monthly meeting, of the Hawera .County Council on Saturday, when the official totals ■ from the traffic census from August, 25 to August 31 (inclusive) were, made available. Made in conjunction with a. Dominion-wide census of motor vehicles, the census revealed an overwhelming' preponderance of private motor-cars. Horse-drawn vehicles at certain points were almost nonexistent.

A team representing the recently formed Hurleyville Cricket Club visited Manutahi last week-end, when the first game of the season was played. .Manutahi won by a comfortable margin in an enjoyable day’s sport in ideal conditions. Mrs. E. M. Southcombe is visiting her mother, Mrs. Jones, at Waikanae. Mrs. A. B. Muggeridge and family have returned from a holiday at Wanganui. Mrs. P. G. Jackson and Miss Sylvia Jackson are the guests of Mrs. O’Sullivan. ’ Miss Calver has not resumed her duties at the Manutahi ’ school owing to illness. Miss G. Mclntosh, Wanganui, is relieving teacher until Miss Calver returns. COMPLIMENTARY EVENING. FOOTBALLERS PATEA'S GUESTS. A meeting' of citizens on Friday at Patea decided to arrange a complimentary smoke concert in honour of the Patea Football Club’s successes this season. ’ A number of Patea and district artists promised their support.
