SERVICE IN TECHNICAL WORK

OFFICERS ON LOAN BY WAR OFFICE. EXTENSION OF COAST DEFENCES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The War Office has advised the Government of the selection of Captain A. J. Edney and Quartermaster-Sergeant P. Shilloto to come to New Zealand on loan for service in technical work for the Defence Department. Both officers will arrive in New Zealand toward the end of the year. It was recently announced by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, that the Government had decided to obtain on loan from the War Office the services of an officer of the Royal Engineers and of a warrant officer to take in hand the technical work involved in modernising and extending the coast defences of the Dominion, Mr. Cobbe stated to-day that in accordance with a recommendation by the War Office it was being arranged that Captain Edney should make a stay of three weeks at Singapore en route to New Zealand to study the work being done there. It was considered the knowledge and experience gained by Captain Edney at Singapore would be of great value to New Zealand when he came to perform the special duties to be assigned him in the Dominion.
