LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
CONTRACEPTIVES BILL HELP UP. BOUNDARY OF PUKEKURA PARK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Select Committee which considered the Contraceptives Bill recommended that the Bill be not allowed to proceed further this session, but that the Government consider taking .up legislation dealing with the subject matter of the Bill next session. The Council went into committee on the Gaming Amendment Bill. The Hon. L. M. Isitt condemned the provision of the double totalisator on the ground that it would increase gambling. He said racing clubs desired to get some of the money that was now going to the bookmaker and he preferred to see the bookmaker get it rather than the clubs, which would increase the number of race meetings.
The Hon. T. Bloodworth said betting was conducted all over the Dominion and the more it was confined to the racecourse the less would be the temptation to people. The clause was passed by 19 votes to 2. Mr. Isitt also opposed the clause relating to the publication of dividends on the grounds that it would popularise betting by giving further information. The Hon. J. McLeod said the public was entitled to the information which at present could be obtained from other sources.
The clause was passed by 18 votes to 3. The Bill was read a third time and passed. The following local Bills were put through the remaining stages and passed: The Christchurch City Empowering Bill, the Timaru Borough Empowering Bill, the Greymouth United Borough Rating Bill, the New Plymouth Borough Land Exchange and Empowering Bill and the Te Ore Ore River Board Bill. The Council rose at. 4.30 p.m. until September 19.
