WOMEN’S DIVISION

Okaiawa: The monthly meeting of the branch‘was held on Monday, when ..Miss Washer presided over a good attendA motion of sympathy with Mrs. Toi/g' was passed. Arrangements were made for a summer show exhibit, and for a garden party on Labour Day. It was decided to hold meetings on the first Tuesday in the month. It was decided to forward £1 to community chest fund. A bring and buy afternoon is to be held at the next monthly meeting. Mrs. A. Lees gave an interesting talk on Honolulu. She was accorded a vote of thanks.

Brixton: Mrs. McCaul presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting. Mrs.. Hooper and Mrs. Jury were welcomed as new msnbers. It was decided to send for a parcel of goods from the returned soldiers, and to send used stamps to the cancer research fund and the Manuera Children’s Home months about. An invitation was received to attend the Waitara Institute’s birthday. Tht president asked members to bring along vegetable and flower plants to exchange. It was decided to hold a ball as tlje final gathering of the season on Thursday, September 13, and a children’s plain and fancy on the following night. Mrs. McCaul gave a short demonstration of the uses of old felt hats. A cushion made from these was shown. The day of the meeting coinciding with Mrs. Hopson’s birthday, greetings were extended, to her, and to Miss Hopson, who was 21 years old on the previous day. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs. Rowe in her bereavement. Hostesses were Mrs. Aitken senr., Mrs. Aitken junr., and Miss Fulton. Stratford: The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday of last week, Mrs. Trotter presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors. Two new members were elected. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs. Woodmore, a former member of the branch. The social convener, Mrs. Martyn, asked to be transferred to Dannevirke branch as she would shortly be. leaving for that district. This was acceded to with regret,’ several members pointing out the good work accomplished by Mrs. Martyn. Mrs. Trotter was appointed convener for the remainder of the year. An offer was received from Mrs. A. D. Walker, Ngaere, to place her grounds at the disposal of the branch for a garden party, which was accepted. Two demonstrations were given by Mrs. Milne, Toko, and Mrs. Meads, Midhirst. Hostesses were Mesdames' Cleland and Ireland.

Ngaere: The usual monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, when Mrs. Kofoed presided over an attendance of 30. A roll call for the programme for the next six months brought forth quite a number of good suggestions. A pastry demonstration was given by Mrs. Taylor. There were quite a number of entries in the tapestry competition, .which was won by Miss Walker, with Mrs. J. Arthur second and Mrs. Scott third. As Mrs. Walker offered the use of her garden to the institute, a garden party is to be held early next month. For the potato competition it was left to the members to get their own potatoes. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Bonner and Kofoed and the Misses Edwards and Schumacher.

New Plymouth: There was a good attendance of members at a meeting yesterday in St. Andrew’s hall. Mrs. Arthur reported that to date she had made a very successful canvass for stamps for the cancer research fund. The hostesses were Mrs. Bentley and Mrs. J. Brown. After afternoon tea Mrs. D. K. Morrison gave a demonstration on general gardening work. Mrs. Morrison had the seed boxes, soil and all necessary gardening equipment on the table, as well as rose bushes and a carnation, from which layers and slips were made.

ELTHAM PLUNKET SOCIETY, FAREWELL TO MRS. E. NEWLAND. Committee members of the Eltham Plunket Society met on Tuesday afternoon to farewell Mrs. E. Newland. The function took the form of an informal afternoon tea at the home of Mrs. A. J. McPherson. Mrs. J. Campbell, the president, presented the guest of honour with a posy of violets and freesias. Competitions were won by Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Higgins. Those present included Lady Carncross, Mesdames R. Gover, E. Butler, Picard, Higgins, A. Belcher, R. Lee, C. Cooper, Crawford, B.
