WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Turi township: An excellent attendance of members was present at the monthly meeting of the institute on Wednesday. Mrs. Heathcote, a member of South Wellington Federation, was a visitor, also members from Foxton, Whareroa, Turuturu and Normanby institutes. Mrs. H. Washer gave a talk on the arrangement of flowers, with special regard to grouping and colours. She took vases, bowls, floating bowls, sprays and posies as illustrations. The month’s competition was for a vase of yellow flowers, and Mrs. Washer explained the merits'and faults of the entries. Mrs. Spink came first in this competition and Mrs. Strange second. Mrs. Larcom, convener of the catering sub-committee set up to make arrangements for lunch, etc., at the half-yearling Taranaki Federation meeting to be held in Hawera, attended to ask for contributions. She received generous support from members. The secretaries of the drama, arts and crafts circles and social committee gave reports on their activities which showed considerable interest in these branches of institute work. Mrs. Muir, who had given valuable help by providing dance music .at the social evenings recently held was especially invited to attend during the afternoon. The members showed their appreciation of her help by presenting Mrs. Muir with a Victorian posy. Sister Edson, Hawera hospital staff, who was leaving the district to take up an appointment at Christchurch, was also the recipient of a posy. Mrs. Shaw, wishing Miss Edson all success and happiness, said she had been a member from the beginning of the institute. Tire large cake given by Mrs. Muir and iced by Mrs. Hoddle was won by Mrs. H. Collier. Four new members, Mesdames Stevens, Howard, Spragg and Miss McCall, were elected. Tire trading stall under Mrs. C. Sharpe did good business. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Cressey, E. K. Cameron, K. Cawsey, H. Ackroyd, H. Collier and Miss P. Baker. Riverlea: The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, Mrs. Harre presiding over a good attendance. A competition for the most useful article made from waste brought ten entries, the winners being Miss E. Webby 1, Miss J. Southern 2, Mrs. D. Gibson 3. Mrs. Brewer, Kaponga, demonstrated the making of cane trays. Mesdames Harre and Eaves were appointed delegates to the half-yearly council meeting at Hawera. The institute members commemorated Arbor Day by planting 29 native trees in the school grounds. Mesdames Munro, Hooper, Gargen and Miss M. Farquhar were hostesses. Ohawe: The Ohawe Institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, there being a good attendance. The president welcomed visitors from Tawhiti and Whareroa. The points competition, three date scones, was won by Mrs. Barron, with Mrs. Foy second. A second competition was won by Mrs. Hitchcock. The roll call, drawing an animal blindfold, caused much amusement. Mrs. Bray, the delegate for the Wellington conference, gave an address on her trip. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Hitchcock and Muggeridge. The same evening the institute flag five hundred party was held There was a splendid attendance. The prizes were won by Mesdames Macaninmy and Muggeridge and Messrs. Wasley and Muggeridge. Rawliitiroa: The monthly meeting was held yesterday, when 18 members and one visitor were present. Mrs. R. B. Foord, of Eltham, gave a demonstration of the curing of skins, and exhibited many excellent samples of cured sheep and hare skins. A competition for an article made out of sugar bags resulted: Mrs. W. Bootten 1, Mrs. H. C. Belcher 2, Miss D. Robinson 3. Arrangements were made to hold a social evening to celebrate the first birthday of the institute. Several seedlings and plants were exchanged by members. Hostesses were Mrs. Gernhoefer and Miss Willy. Eltham: A flag five hundred afternoon was held on Wednesday, when the prizewinners were Mesdames P. de Launay, R. Darling, G. Prentice and Miss S. Camcross. Consolation prizes were awarded Mesdames Burgess, Fowler, Morris and Roberts.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES’ EXECUTIVE. The executive committee of the Taranaki Federation of Women’s Institutes met at Normanby on Tuesday, when long business in connection with the institutes was discussed. Final arrangements were made for the half-yearly council meeting. After the meeting the members were entertained at afternoon tea by Mesdames J. Meuli and E. J. Linn. Those present were Mesdames W. Kaye, Inglewood, president, W. J. Smith, Inglewood, C. Smith, Opunake, C. H. Brewer, Kaponga, A. McAsey, Te Roti, A. Whitehead, Tikorangi, A. Morey, Waitara, T. J. Allan, Normanby, W. H. Walton, Patea, and Misses A. Coleman, Ngaere, and E. Free, Normanby.
