Beck left on Thursday for Waverley, where she will be staying with her sister, Mrs. J. MacKenzie, for a few days. Miss Mollie Washer returned last weekend from a three weeks’ holiday at Auckland, Cambridge and New Plymouth. Mrs. Harvey was hostess at an evening’s bridge on Friday of last week, when Mrs. T. H. Underhill, Wellington, was the highest scorer. Mrs. A. K. North’s father, Mr. Dawson, Christchurch, has been visiting her. He returned to the South Island during the week. Mrs. E. A. Pacey returned last weekend from a week spent at Wanganui, where she was Mrs. Will Hutchins’ guest. Misses Sheila and Pat Lovell, Miss M. McKenzie and her guest, Miss Iris MacDonald, Invercargill, were visitors to Patea for the Victory ball on Monday night. Mesdames H. D. Cameron, W. B. Farquharson J. - Ogle, R. J. O’Dea, L. B. Lewis, W. G. Strange and Miss Cameron were Mrs. J. B. Murdoch’s guests at tea on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Ethel Murdoch assisted her mother. On Monday afternoon Mesdames Moorhouse, J. Ecksell, G. Wyatt, E. A. Pacey, W. M. Eggleston, A. C. Ross, J. B. Murdoch, D. Caplen and Miss E. Murdoch were guests at tea when Mrs. H. D. Cameron entertained. Mrs. W. M. Egglestone entertained on Thursday afternoon, when Mesdahxes W. Syme, H. T. Underhill (Wellington),' C. Whittington, J. B. Murdoch, Harvey, R. D. Speer and Miss E. Murdoch were present at afternoon tea. On Tuesday evening the Taranaki Plunket nurses met at dinner at the Women’s Club, when Miss J. McCall, Hawera, was hostess. The object of the meeting was to discuss matters in connection with their work. The visiting nurses included Misses Petersen, Cartwright and Poff (New Plymouth), Miss Thom (Opunake), Miss Tompkins (Patea) and Miss Mason (Stratford). Several teams are visiting Hawera to take part in the Collins Cup competition for home nursing to be judged at Hawera to-day. There are two teams from I Wellington, with Sister Lewis in charge, ' one team from Upper Hutt, with whom is the secretary, Mrs. Gibbs, a team from New Plymouth under Mrs. Southam and two teams of Hawera V.A.D.'s. A Hawera team is the holder of the cup. Blue grape hyacinths, yellow cowslips and narcissi blended well in mixed bowls in Mrs. D. G. Smart’s sitting-room when she entertained a number of friends at tea during the week. The hostess wore a black silk velvet gown with a jacket oriental motif to receive her visitors, who included Mesdames G. A. Burgess, L. Hamilton (Manutahi), L. J. Bull, C. Tonks and Misses Rawson, L._ Hay-MacKenzie, N. Watty and J. Lennon.

Mrs. Burt, Wellington, who has been staying with Mrs. W. Fendall for the past few weeks, returned home on Friday. Bowls of spring bulbs in mixed tones of yellow and cream attractively decorated Mrs. J. H. Sutton’s sitting-room at “Sunnydene” on Tuesday afternoon when she was hostess at an afternoon for her Australian visitor, Miss Elsa Holden, Sydney. Mrs. Sutton chose a model in white stiffened chiffon flower-patterned in hyacinth blue, with a blue ring velvet coatee, to receive her friends, and the guest of honour wore a coffee-beige lace robe, over which was a tortoise-shell brown chiffon-velvet jerkin tunic, with corded waist-tie. Mesdames C. S. Robb, H. Jones, W. B. Farquharson and Misses K. Coleman, M. Washer, M. Black, A. Wills, R. Pease, M. Bright, S. Lovell, N. Duckworth, G. Goodson, P. Lovell and J. Powdrell were among the guests at tea. CLUB PLAY-READING. The attendance at the play-reading circle’s evenings at the club continues to be encouraging, and on Tuesday there were about 40 present. The play, J. B. Priestly’s “Laburnum Grove,” was a happy choice, the committee being fortunate in securing such a new work. It was produced for the first time in London last November. The main part — of “George Redfern”—was well done by Miss Glenn, but the cast all through was a strong one. Those reading were Misses Glenn, D. Corrigan, E. Caplen and Mesdames A. K. North, P. O. Veale, H. R. Kemp, W. C. Fyfe, and J. Houston. Mrs. T. F. McKenzie read the stage directions. Others present included Mesdames C. G. Trotter, Andrews, L. A. Ablett, R. R. Henderson, A. K. Fyson, S. R. Veitch, E. Evans, M. R. Jones, O. K. Tennent, Anderson, S. A. Chisholm, Dickie, Stone-Wigg (Winchester), W. G. Simpson, W. Gibson, W. Thomas, A. E. Stevens, R. R. Henderson, C. Bayley, A. K. North, A. J. Corrigan, Wilson (Ararata), W. W. Thomas, G. Wyatt, and Misses L. Hay-Mackenzie, D. Richardson, I. E. R. McLean, J. Patterson (Wanganui), C. Reilly, Tennent (Masterton), M. C. Power, B. Theed, M. Crabb and Wood.
